Welcome Back!

Hi everyone! We are so happy to welcome everyone back.

This year looks a little different for ENL. First, your child's ENL proficiency level is staying the same as last year. Whether you are virtual or in person, you will still be getting ENL Services.

Our Meet the Teacher Night is Tuesday, September 15th for Kindergarten - 2nd Grade and Wednesday, September 16th for grades 3-5. Feel free to stop by and ask questions on either night. You may wish to attend your child's classroom teacher's presentation on their night, and mine on the night opposite of your child's grade level.

Carissa Zuniga is inviting you to a scheduled Zoom meeting.

For Virtual ENL Students

                    September 1, 2020

Dear Parents or Guardians:

     Your child has previously received English as a New Language (ENL)  services. Normally at this time of year, you would get a letter with your child’s test scores. Because there was no testing in May, your child will remain at their level from the previous year. ENL students will take the New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) in the spring of 2021. Until they reach a proficient level of English required to exit the ENL program, they will continue to receive services. The time necessary for achieving proficiency in English will vary with each child, depending on many factors, including their initial level of English proficiency and previous school experiences.

The ENL teacher will work with classroom teachers to ensure that your child has every opportunity to be supported in successful English language learning. Even as a virtual learner, your child will have time with an ENL teacher. There will be a virtual check in once a week in the morning, and additional time can optionally be scheduled between 1:30 pm and 2:30 pm.

Your child should already be in an ENL Google Classroom. That classroom has not moved or changed from the previous year. If your child is not enrolled, they can search for my email to find the invitation, or they can use the code on the attached chart. Please check the Google Classroom regularly for updates and links for the morning meetings on your designated day..

There are tutorials about using Google Translate and Google Classroom on my website https://watervlietenl.blogspot.com/. These tutorials are available in several different languages.

Please email or call if you have questions, would like more information, or would like to discuss your child’s progress. You can also contact me through Talking Points, which is helpful as it will translate our communications.  I look forward to working with you this year!

Sincerely,

Carissa Zuniga

My Favorite Books For Ramadan

Over the years I have built up a little collection of books about Ramadan. I figured I would share a few of my favorites.

The first is Lailah's Lunchbox by Reem Faruqi. It's about a young girl's first time fasting. She is new to the United States and trying to fit in.

Another favorite is Golden Domes and Silver Lanterns by Hena Khan. This is written for younger children. It's a beautifully illustrated book of colors.

What are your favorite books about holidays?

The Hello, Goodbye Window

The Hello, Goodbye Window by Norton Juster was one of my son's favorite stories when he was little.

The Proudest Blue

The Proudest Blue is a story about a little girl wearing a hijab to school for the first time. It is written by Ibtihaj Muhammad, the first Muslim woman to win an Olympic medal.

ESL at Home

Ms. Rehm found a great new resource! ESL at Home.

It has a variety of activities. The best part is that all of the activities are written out in home languages, so parents can help their students with them. They have Spanish, French, Portuguese, Fari, Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Arabic!

Try them out and let us know what you think.

Nailed It!

     I love the Netflix show Nailed It.

I always get a good laugh when I'm watching. One of my friends posted a Nailed It challenge. Of course, I was in! The rules were simple. Try to duplicate the cake in the picture.  Don't go out and buy any special equipment - use only what you already have in your house. You can buy ingredients like eggs or sugar, just no crazy cake decorating equipment.

     I looked at the picture and thought, that's not too hard to do.  I didn't have a small cake pan, so I used a saucepan to bake my cake.  I put some parchment paper so it would not stick. It didn't stick, but the paper fell in on itself a bit, so my cake's shape wasn't as cylindrical as I wanted.

    I found some candy eyes in my pantry. I have no idea how old they are! They are just sugar, and there was no expiration date, so I thought that it was safe to use them.

     The cupcake wasn't too bad to make. I used a zip lock back for a pastry bag. I think his eyes look cute!

     So here is my finished project.  How did I do? It's not perfect for sure. The white icing could be a bit smoother.  The important thing is that I tried my best. It also tasted pretty good.

   My challenge to my students is try something new that you've never done, but always wanted to do. Even if it's not perfect, it is still worth attempting that hard thing.  Then you can say "NAILED IT!"

Watervliet Parade

     When Mrs. Webster said that we were going to do a parade through Watervliet, I was so excited to participate. I have been stuck in the house for almost 3 weeks now. I only left the house once to go to the grocery store.

    Here's the map they sent out. I was a bit confused but I figured I would follow the leader.

     I did have a professional development at 10am this morning. I think the teachers are learning as much as the kids are these days. I didn't want to miss either thing. It was going to be tight but I felt like I could do it.

     I made it to Watervliet High School just in a nick of time. A lot of cars were already lined up. I had some balloons, and stuck them out of my windows.

    We crisscrossed all through the streets of Watervliet. My car was towards the end of the line. Did you see me? I got really choked up and then started crying when I saw all of you lined up, even though it was raining! The day was dreary, but I saw so many happy rainbows all over the city. It really touched me.

    Someone said they counted over 90 cars! How many do you think there were?

    Mrs. Brown made a great slide show with a ton of different pictures from the parade. Are you in there anywhere?

Still Winter?

     It is snowing today.  Is it snowing in Watervliet? Spring should have started a couple of days ago. I was so excited to change the sign in my room from WINTER to SPRING. It feels a bit better being stuck inside if it is snowing though. I hope you are warm and cozy inside your house.

All State Tests are Cancelled!

STATEMENT FROM BOARD OF REGENTS CHANCELLOR BETTY A. ROSA AND INTERIM STATE EDUCATION COMMISSIONER SHANNON TAHOE REGARDING ELEMENTARY- AND INTERMEDIATE-LEVEL STATE ASSESSMENTS
The school closures caused by Novel Coronavirus are unprecedented and so, we have to make unprecedented decisions for our students. The administrations of the 2020 elementary- and intermediate-level State assessments have been suspended for the remainder of this school year.
It is most important that during the time of closure, schools are able to continue to focus their efforts toward local school and community needs, as they have been doing, and not be concerned about State assessments. NYSED has applied for federal waivers for testing, accountability, and reporting requirements.
The priority for the Board of Regents and the Department is to ensure that districts provide continuity of instruction for students to the greatest extent possible. It is a critical component of school emergency management, as it promotes the continuation of teaching and learning and prevents learning loss while schools are closed. However, many considerations play a role in developing continuity of learning programs such as access and availability, type and quality of materials and the length of time that the various types of learning will require. We are working with districts now to receive and review their plans.
We are incredibly grateful to the educators who are devoted to developing these plans in the most equitable way possible and who have provided resources for parents and children.
NYSED continues to work with the Governor’s Office, the state Department of Health, the Division of Homeland Security and the Office of Children and Family Services to ensure that we are up to date on all guidance and all of our resources for schools related to COVID-19 can be found on NYSED's dedicated website.
Most of all, we hope that our students and educators are well. We are thankful for the devotion and ongoing leadership of our teachers, administrators, school board members and parents who have gone above and beyond so that students are safe and impacted as little as possible.
This suspension for the remainder of the school year applies to the following New York State testing programs:
• New York State Grades 3-8 English Language Arts Test;
• New York State Grades 3-8 Mathematics Test;
• New York State Grade 4 Elementary-Level Science Test;
• New York State Grade 8 Intermediate-Level Science Test;
• New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT) in Grades K-12; and
• New York State Alternate Assessment (NYSAA) for students with severe cognitive disabilities in Grades 3-8 and high school.

Corona Virus Self Distancing

Hi everyone!

I hope your first week away from us is going well.  I miss you a lot. It has been a busy week.

On Monday all the teachers gathered at school to get ready to teach online. It was a crazy busy day. It went by so fast, and I don't think it hit me that I would not see the other teachers again for quite a few days.

On Tuesday, I attended a Zoom meeting through the Carey Institute. I learned a lot. I found out about Talking Point. It's an app where I can text parents. The best part is that it translates into all of your home languages! If you didn't get a text, or need me to change anything please let me know.

On Wednesday, it was my twins' birthday. It was a bit sad that they couldn't go anywhere or do anything. But I did make a cake for them.

On Thursday I had 2 more Zoom meetings. I am learning so much about teaching and learning online.

Today is Friday. I'm making a turkey for dinner! When Mr. Zuniga went to the store there was barely any food left, so he bought a turkey. Have you eaten anything you normally don't eat this week?

So stay tuned. I'll update here as much as I can. If you are in 3rd-6th grades, check your Google classrooms. For those that have little brothers and sisters, read to them as much as you can.

Stay healthy!
